The Release of Graal 1.1 and Graal Gold (February 14, 1999)

Graal version 1.1 was released on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1999.

Up to this point, the game was still largely considered to be in development. Graal had evolved from the beta days of Zelda Online, where Stefan Knorr experimented with Java ROM applets designed to replicate existing games.

During this early period, Graal gradually transitioned from a technical experiment into a growing multiplayer world that would soon introduce player-created content.

The Launch of Graal Gold

At the same time Graal 1.1 was running on the live server, the game officially released Graal Gold.

Graal Gold was marketed as the first full commercial version of Graal, representing the project's transition from its beta phase into a finished product.

In practice, the community colloquially treats Graal 1.1 and Graal Gold as a single milestone — the moment Graal first exited its beta era.

Free Version vs Paid Version

The two versions existed simultaneously:
  • Graal 1.1 – the free version available to players
  • Graal Gold – the paid “full version” marketed as the official release
However, Graal Gold never gained significant traction.

The Only Known Purchase

To date, the only confirmed customer known to have purchased Graal Gold is Azrael Ashavan, who reportedly paid $25 for the game.

The paid version was eventually discontinued and is widely considered to have been a failed commercial release.

Meanwhile, the free version — Graal 1.1 — continued evolving and would ultimately lead into the next major era of the game.
